In addition to using the information that Marvin's Dad has posted http://www.dehon.org/antoine/MP3_Install.htm for installing the Archos MP3 Player using the stock VW head unit (Monsoon) here are some additional pictures and information that I will pass along from my installation experience.
You will need:
· 1 PIE part # VWR-AUX potocol converter interface with 16 pin conector
(available at www.rcainput.com)
· 1 6ft RCA two phono plugs to one 1/8" stereo right angle plug
(available at Radio Shack)
· 1 roll 20 gauge "hook up wire" (available at Radio Shack)
· 20 gauge tap splice (available at Home Depot)
· T20 Torx Screw
· Phillips head screwdriver
· Electrical tape
· 4' length of safety wire or straightened coat hanger
Directions:
1. Tape off dash as pictured to prevent scratching while removing head unit.
2. Use the VW removal keys to extract the head unit
3. remove the blue 16 pin block from the back of the head unit. Refer to the
PIE diagram on page 3. (At this point you may want to remove all connectors
including the antenna lead so you can put the head unit aside.)
4. Remove the lower dash piece where the A/C & Fan switches are. (see
picture page 3)
5. Remove Arm Rest
6. Remove center console (between seats and arm rest)
7. Insert PIE box from under the head unit opening. The box will lie above
the fan switch unit. (see picture page 4)
8. Use a tap splice to connect the ground wire to a length of 20 gauge wire
to route down to a bolt on the frame under the center console.
9. Connect 6ft RCA 2 phono plugs with one 1/8" stereo right-angle plug
to the RCA connectors coming off the PIE box harness.
10. Route wires from harness box up to the opening in the head unit. Run the
RCA & ground wires down to the floor. ( I used a 4' long piece of saftey
wire from the head unit opening to trace a path to the floor on the passenger
side. I then tied the RCA & Ground wire to one end of the safty wire and
then pulled it through.
11. Snake RCA and ground wire through lower center console (between the seats)
12. Attach ground wire to frame using one of the two rear bolts (see page
5)
13. Attach connectors and antenna to back of head unit.
14. plug in RCA to Archos MP3 player "ear".
15. Hit "CD" on head unit selector, turn on MP3 player. Should see
picture (page 6) Play an MP3 should hear it through car speakers.
16. If test worked, reinstall head unit and button up the dash and center
console.
17. Re-attach arm rest
18. Run wires up drivers side of the arm rest. Poke finger through cicular
plastic piece in arm rest. This is a cut out to run wires into the arm rest
compartment. (see pictures pages 7 & 8)
19. Replace armrest covers and fit MP3 player into arm rest compartment.
20. DONE !
